o “Friends of Westside Village Magnet School” a Non-Profit has been formed. This will allow our school quicker and more direct access to our fundraising dollars. Thanks Steve Roti for making this happen.
o Lolli Gonzales presented the idea of starting an athletic program (grades 6-8) at WVMS. There will be a survey sent home to determine each family’s interests level. This is above and beyond this years boys and girls basketball teams but inclusive of this year’s program. An athletic program would offer more opportunities and at different grade levels than just those of the Parks and Rec programs.
o Reviewed budget for next year’s programs and discussed the success of this year’s.
1. Kids in Homework club are feeling higher levels of self-esteem and we are experiencing high levels (90%) of participation.
2. Adding to the budget for next year will be for a mosaic for our new entryway using tiles with an artist in residence, all the kids can participate.
3. Music Roots Program is up to 21 students and guitar is now 24! Some grants have helped expand our music program and we want to continue. A big thanks to Mark Ransom for spearheading this expanded direction. A direct result has been Marimba is up to 21 students and our Elders are now all involved in drumming. We have an artist in residence working with all elders and olders currently. For more detailed budget info, e-mal Wendy.
o Fundraising letter is going out that ask for donations and is tax exempt. This has gone out for 10 years and is in place of selling products.
o We discussed our big fundraising community event, Blues amuse and Brews, a.k.a. (BAB) - Polled the parent community meeting group for their feelings and thoughts about BAB this year or some type of fundraiser in a scaled down format. Staff supports the idea of continuing this fundraiser with parents spearheading it!
o Brenda Gessner informed the group about another fund raising opportunity. Anyone that goes into or orders take out food from McMenamins on Tuesday, April 8th, 2008 from 5:00 until closing will earn our school 50% of the profits from that one night. Tuesday, or Wednesday, food only for 50% of the profits from one of those nights. The group thought this type of fundraiser is a go! Staff supported this idea from their meeting also!
